Biography
In 1983 he was named the #1 jr. golfer in the United States by Golf Digest magazine, as well as being the Junior World Champion. Just days later in the middle of his senior year of high school (January 1983), Stuart was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. This rare and usually fatal type of bone cancer came with the grim diagnosis of a 50% chance of surviving 3 years, and a slim chance of surviving 5 years. His cancer treatments started with 16 months of high dose grueling chemotherapy treatments. The last chemotherapy treatment gave him hepatitis due to chemical toxicity to his liver (too much chemotherapy). After 6 months of recovery from hepatitis, he underwent bone graft surgery on his left femur. This surgery was followed by approximately 12 months of rehabilition. After almost 3 years away from the game, Stuart was able to resume his life and golf career after his battle with cancer. Stuart immediately began playing for the University of Houston golf team where he was on a full golf scholarship. Stuart qualified for and was a member of the record breaking Southwest Conference winning team just months after resuming his golf career. Stuart embarked on his professional golf career in 1986 and qualified for the Canadian Professional Golf Tour in 1987. In 1990, during the Alberta Open, he met Virginia (Gini) Weenink at the Wolf Creek Golf Resort. In December of 1992, he and Virginia (Gini) were married and Stuart became a resident of Alberta, Canada. In October of 1999, Stuart and Gini adopted their daughter Kamryn. Stuart competed full-time (1987-2000) on the Canadian, Australian, South African, South American and Asian Professional Golf Tours. He also competed in a number of events on the European, Japanese and U.S. PGA Tours, as well as various tournaments in the Caribbean, Mexico and Panama. In January of 1999, Stuart competed in his 30th country when he played in the Panama Open. Stuart currently has a total of 22 professional wins worldwide. Stuart has performed his various golf services including entertaining golf demonstrations and instructional clinics at approximately 450 corporate outings and tournaments, charity events, golf academies, junior functions, speaking engagements, and other golf related functions worldwide. Competeting on the various professional golf tours around the world and spending time with the top players and coaches in the game has provided Stuart with an abundance of golf knowledge and interesting experiences beneficial for entertaining, teaching and coaching. Stuart has appeared in a number of commercials in the United States and Canada for various corporate sponsors, golf products and golf projects. He was also a player/director on the board of the Canadian Professional Golf Tour (2000-2003). From 2001 - 2008 he played some competitive golf, was busy performing his various golf services at tournaments and functions across North America and spent a great deal of time teaching and coaching a number of other serious golfers. He also acted as a consultant on a number of exciting golf projects in Canada. Stuart and his family (wife and daughter) moved to Midland, Texas, in the summer of 2008. After spending some time helping his family get settled in West Texas, he got busy working on his game, coaching a number of high school students, college golfers, and other professionals. In 2009 Stuart played approximately 15 tournaments around North America on a few different tours. He played some of the most consistent golf of his professional career during the 2nd half of the season. Stuart also spent a great deal of time teaching/coacing his high school and college golfers, as well as a few other professionals. After 24 years of playing professional tour golf all over the world, Stuart decided was time to be home more often to enjoy spending more time with his wife, daughter and new puppy (daughter's 10th birthday present). He enjoys attending all of his daughter's activities, playing as much competitive golf as his new schedule will allow, expanding his teaching/coaching business and working on securing additional corporate sponsor deals including performing his services at corporate and charity golf functions. Stuart started as the new Director of Instruction at Green Tree Country Club in Midland, Texas, on Feb. 2, 2010. His first year at Green Tree was a busy, productive, successful and interesting experience and he looks forward to the future. Stuart's glass is always half full! |
